I am delighted to share that I have recently been awarded Diplomate status of the European Board of Orthodontics (EBO), becoming one of only three Irish orthodontists to have successfully completed this prestigious assessment.
This achievement is particularly meaningful to me as it means I am now the only orthodontist in Ireland to hold Diplomate status from both the European Board of Orthodontics (EBO) and the European Board of Aligner Orthodontics (EBAO).
While professional qualifications are not something most patients think about when choosing an orthodontist, the EBO examination represents one of the highest levels of independent assessment available within our specialty and provides reassurance that treatment is being delivered to internationally recognised standards.
The European Orthodontic Society created the European Board of Orthodontics (EBO) to recognise excellence in clinical orthodontics.
Unlike specialist examinations, which assess whether an orthodontist has reached the standard required for specialist registration, the EBO examination evaluates the quality of clinical work after specialist training has been completed.
Experienced orthodontists choose to undertake the examination voluntarily to benchmark their work against some of the highest standards in the profession. As a result, relatively few orthodontists sit the examination.
The EBO examination is demanding.
Candidates must present a portfolio of completed orthodontic cases to an international panel of examiners. Each case must demonstrate excellence across a broad range of orthodontic problems and treatment approaches.
Examiners carefully assess:
Candidates must justify their treatment decisions and defend their cases before experienced examiners from across Europe.
The examination assesses much more than technical skill. It evaluates diagnostic ability, treatment planning, risk management, clinical judgement, and the quality of patient care.
Orthodontics involves far more than straightening teeth.
Successful treatment requires an understanding of facial growth, dental development, biomechanics, aesthetics, function, and long-term stability. The EBO examination evaluates all of these areas together.
Passing the examination demonstrates the ability to deliver consistently high-quality treatment across a wide variety of clinical situations.
Most importantly, the assessment focuses on real patients and completed treatments rather than theoretical knowledge alone.
For patients, EBO Diplomate status provides independent recognition of clinical excellence.
It demonstrates that an orthodontist has presented and defended completed cases before an international panel of experienced peers. It also reflects a commitment to continuing education, professional development, and maintaining high clinical standards.
No qualification can guarantee a specific treatment outcome. However, EBO Diplomate status provides reassurance that treatment is delivered by an orthodontist whose work has undergone rigorous independent assessment.
Earlier in my career, I became the first orthodontist in Ireland to achieve Diplomate status of the European Board of Aligner Orthodontics (EBAO).
The EBAO examination focuses specifically on clear aligner treatment. The EBO examination assesses comprehensive orthodontic care across all appliance systems and treatment philosophies.
Holding both qualifications reflects my commitment to excellence across the full spectrum of modern orthodontics. This includes fixed braces, lingual braces, clear aligners, skeletal anchorage, skeletal expansion, growth modification, and multidisciplinary treatment.
Orthodontics is a profession that continually evolves. Every patient presents a unique challenge, and there is always more to learn.
For me, the EBO examination was never about collecting another qualification. It was about benchmarking my work against the highest international standards and ensuring that the care I provide continues to improve year after year.
I am deeply grateful to my mentors, colleagues, patients, friends, and family who have supported me throughout this journey.
Most importantly, I would like to thank the patients whose trust allows me to do the work I love every day.
The achievement of EBO Diplomate status does not change my philosophy of care.
Every patient deserves an accurate diagnosis, honest advice, and a treatment plan tailored to their individual needs. Whether the treatment is simple or highly complex, my goal remains the same: to provide healthy, functional, stable, and natural-looking results that stand the test of time.
